I normally don’t style my own wigs and make other people do it for me, but here are some tips:
~Hair gel won’t work, use hair spray, hair glue, or even white craft glue would work. Here’s a spike tutorial a friend made: http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1922155/
~To straighten a wig, pin it to a wig head, brush it out, and pour hot water over it. Wait for it to dry fully and then brush again. I’ve noticed that wigs get as straight as they’re going to by the 3rd attempt if you just use this, but there are methods to get them pretty much stick straight.
~To make curls, wrap a strand of hair around a pencil or other such object and use much hair spray. Let dry, and you’ll have curls.
~Use a widetoothed comb for brushing, a rattail comb for parting and lifting (the handle only, don’t brush it with the rattail).

It would help if you had pictures and explained what you were trying to do to the wig.
