All judges wear wigs in court. In England, Barristers wear wigs also. Their Scottish equivalent, advocates, also wear wigs in court. Normal solicitors don’t wear a wig to court. All lawyers will wear a gown to court also.

We like our tradition! We’ve always done it, and always will.

Not “British” but “English” Scotland has a seperate legal system.

Although English legal dress has a long history, it has for the most part evolved without written regulation. Before the 17th century lawyers did not wear wigs, but professional discipline required that their hair and beards should be moderately short.

Nevertheless, the introduction of wigs into polite society during the reign of Charles II (1660-1685) was an innovation, and lawyers began wearing wigs in the 1680s.

In the 1860s, lawyers were permitted to remove their wigs during a heat wave. This attracted some comment in the press and it was suggested that wigs be abandoned altogether by the legal profession. Although the proposal met with little support, it has been a common occurrence ever since for judges to allow wigs to be left off in very hot weather.

i think they still do that in the court room. Anything behind that, you are just going to have to wikipedia it. I guess it was more about looking professional. I wonder how those things worked in war or if they used them in war?

Head lice were a problem. People would shave their head and wear a wig, which was more easily cleaned. Often they would put a powder in the wig to discourage the lice from living in the wigs.
